What is the difference between brake disc and brake drum for automotive retrofitted brake system

Four-wheel brake drums have always been standard on cars. In the brake drum, hydraulic pressure is applied to a piston that pushes out the curved shoe. Brake discs have been used in aircraft and industrial applications. By applying pressure to the brake calipers, the friction material clamps the rotating brake discs. Brake discs are not as sensitive as brake drums, so they provide better directional stability when stopping. The open disc has both advantages and disadvantages. As air cools the disc through the friction material. So most of the front wheel brake disc is ventilated, dirty things and gas will be thrown out of the rotating brake disc, some brake disc hole groove, although reduce the area of friction material, but may card small stones, so the car modification needs better maintenance.

The weakness of the brake disc is that the car is exposed to dust after modification. The dust produced by the disc and brake disc will wear the brake disc faster. If the disc is small, it will not dissipate heat and will burn, leaving the front disc in clean air and the rear disc exposed to dust and debris thrown by the front tyres. This is why the rear brake discs generally wear out faster than the front discs. In order to get more braking capacity, many cars are now fitted with four-wheel discs.
